Can anyone offer any suggestions on how to get rid of "piss" ants, also affectionately known as sugar ants.

We have pest control once a week (if you've ever been to Georgia in the summer you know why), but it's not helping. We had a problem with the ants at the beginning of summer for a few weeks, then they just disappeared. Now they're back and I can't seem to get rid of them.

I'm obsessive about cleaning my kitchen counters, so food left lying about is not the problem. It looks like they are coming in through the area where the dishwasher is, where obviously there would be food particles.

Can anyone help? Keep in mind I have a two year old lurking about, so any eco-friendly, kid-friendly suggestions would be appreciated.

That's gonna be a hard one to take care of. Several people that I know have had ant problems ever since they moved in to their homes, and it's because the problem is under the house. Without some serious work they won't be able to get rid of them. My old roommate in VA made renovations to his home by himself which included building a a kitchen over what was once a patio. He laid the floor down over the location of what was apparently an ant colony and has not been able to find a way to completely get rid of the ants - they come back every year and the same locations get overrun by them.

I read that some recent studies have concluded that many home remedies against ant infestations actually make the problem worse - to avoid the baits and traps and pesticides the ants simply move to another location or split to form multiple colonies. They're a huge problem in California because of the long periods of drought that we have (San Diego is a coastal desert, therefore very little rain. Ever).

Ants are one of the most annoying pests that I've come across. The second would be meal moths that invade your pantry which seem to be nearly impossible to get ride of.

I wonder if the drought we've had here this year has anything to do with it. We've been here almost three years and this is the first time we've ever had a problem.

Now that I think about it, the time period that the ants "disappeared" was when we were having heavy rain every day. It's supposed to rain this week. Hopefully, that will help.

It finally rained last week and sure enough, the ants took a hike. I've seen one or two stray ants, but the rest of them seem to be staying back outside.
