Grumpy Auld Bastards > TODAY!........ I think I'm going to........ > Slabber!

We have just had two earthquakes today located about 125 miles east of St. Louis. The first one was 5.2 about 4:37 AM CST and the second one 4.5 about 10:15 AM CST. One of the guys I work with said he talked to somebody that has family near the epicenter and they have had 4 or 5 smaller ones in between those two. I am not sure if the fault line is on the New Madrid line. This is the fault line that had several violent quakes during December 1811 through February 1812. Those were felt in 27 states, mad the Mississippi river flow backwards, formed several lakes in the area, and rang church bells in Philadelphia.

Today's quake (the first one at least) was detected as far north as the Dakotas and as far south as Atlanta.

A 5.2? That's just a little trembler. Now if you'd had the quake while a tornado was ripping through the local trailer park, that would have been interesting.

Oh, and just in case you were wondering...THE QUAKES WERE CAUSED BY GLOBAL WARMING!!!

So you think that all we have here in the midwest is trailer parks?

Yeah, I know it isn't a big one. But you should hear some of the people calling in to the radio stations. You would think it was the ones from 1811-12. I didn't think much of it. It mostly felt like a bunch of large trucks going past my house really close. Now if this is part of an earthquake swarm, then there could always be a bigger one coming soon. But I doubt it.

I made the "trailer park" remark because those are the people you (obviously) always hear about ending up dead when a tornado hits in the midwest. Ironically, those same people are probably the safest in an earthquake. (who ever heard of a mobile home collapsing on its occupant?)

There haven't actually been many earthquakes in Southern California recently. There was one at about 1AM a few weeks ago that startled the hell out of me, but it was a quickie and didn't do any damage that I know of (the "boom" accompanying the vibration actually had me wondering if a plane had crashed into a house on my block).

There should be a big one coming soon, though.

On Monday, a team of seismologists issued the first statewide report on the probability of future earthquakes, and the news, for those who chose to pay attention to it, was pretty terrifying. The chance of a 6.7 magnitude quake striking one of the many active faults in California within the next 30 years is now more than 99 percent.

I could have made a prediction that general. 30 years? So dumb.

The earthquake did shake the trailer parks, but it is estimated that it did $1M worth of improvements! rofl.gif

Yeah, I saw that prediction of 30 years and thought the same thing. You would think that they could be a little more specific about it. Of course, they (whoever the hell they are) have been saying that the New Madrid fault is over due to produce a pretty good one. Well see.

We had earthquake activity here?

I thought that was my neighbor upstairs running on the treadmill.

Oh, sorry. No, that was just me. I had Taco Bell last night.

Excuse me.

That must have been one big bean burrito!

You use it as a suppository or something?

Luckily we get no earthquakes or tornadoes here to speak of glad it was nothing serious Mike smile.gif

I have only experienced an earthquake once, and that was in Croatia many years ago.

I quite enjoyed it.
I was like a kid in a play park............. "Daddy: do it again, do it again"
Mike
Yeah this wasn't bad and I was intrigued by it. I wouldn't want to experience a big on in the city, maybe out in the middle of a field, but not the city.
badbart
It sounds like the aftershocks have been ongoing and pretty strong.

Have you felt any of those?

I didn't feel the one this morning around 12:30 AM. Most of the smaller ones are probably too far away. I think there has been about 9 of them so far. There was an article on the internet that talked about how this could be a prelude to the big one. But it also said that it could be heloing to reduce the chance of a big one.

Ah...so you're going to start warning your friends in different parts of the world that Ted has visited to "beware the angry Irishman!" now, eh?

Probably not a bad idea, in retrospect...

It was 1998, or maybe 1999.
I was working for Disney in Venice, building their 2 cruise ships. One of the ships was out on sea trials and I was over in Trieste with Lloyds Register and a few of us decided to do a weekend drunk in Croatia.
I've been there many many times.

Great spot.

Ah shit. MY kid wants me to take her on a Disney cruise. If I tell her a drunk Irishman built the ship she might have second thoughts...
