I discovered, a few months ago, a TV show called Corner Gas on Chicago's independent WGN TV network. It's been around for quite a few years, but only recently came to the attention of the reality-TV-addicted American viewer (in late 2007). I remember seeing the commercials before I bothered to tune in and thinking, man, why would anyone watch a TV show about a gas station? I did eventually watch an episode, due to a complete lack of anything else worth watching on my 397 channels, and was immediately hooked.
The writing is reminiscent of Seinfeld in its glory days - without involving New York or any other metropolitan area (double bonus points for that). This is truly a show about nothing, but it's far more funny than anything else on TV. I have, since seeing that first episode, set my DVR to record every episode that plays on WGN. And I've watched them all. Even the episodes that I had just seen the week before (I don't know which, if any, of the episodes I've seen might be from the current season). And even when I know what's coming, I laugh at the jokes and the true-to-life clueless characters.
The dryness of the comedy almost seems a little Python-flavoured. If you get WGN or CTV (a Canadian channel) and like a good comedy, you really should check this show out.
