I've never been to one of these high-profile spelling bees, though I've watched parts of some of them on TV. I don't recall ever seeing or hearing anything in the any of the Bees I've watched that made me chuckle, but there are moments like this at times.

The first one I'd heard about was a couple of years ago (and very intentional). A contestant decided to lighten the mood with his Napoleon Dynamite impression.

The commentator, painfully out of touch, had no idea what was going on. "Was that a secret message?"

I just heard about this one today. A contestant actually misheard a word and inadvertently brought the funny.

Hilarious...."numbnut?"

Oh, and Akilah and the Bee is a fantastic movie. It's a good one for kids, too.

Aren't these things usually won by middle eastern or overweight white kids?

Speaking of unintentional funnies...

QUOTE
Middletown Area High School's yearbook listed Max Zupanovic as "Max Supernova," Kathy Carbaugh as "Kathy Airbag" and Alessandra Ippolito as "Alexandria Impolite," just to name a few.

They sound like names from the new Harry Potter book (that's not on its way to the publishers because she's done with Harry...sigh).

I tried my surname and it's common enough that spell check doesn't try to replace it (if capitalized). Take that, bitches! My first name, on the other hand, comes back with a multitude if unflattering options. Good thing spell check wasn't an option 42,000 years ago when I graduated from High School.
