A 22-year-old woman was killed after she was hit by a car while trying to take pictures of a three-vehicle accident on LBJ Freeway early Sunday.

April Sterling of Dallas and her friend were heading west on LBJ Freeway near Plano Road when they stopped so she could take pictures of the accident that occurred about 7:45 a.m., said Dallas police Sgt. Gil Cerda.

Ms. Sterling wanted to get closer to the accident scene so she ran into the HOV lane when a vehicle traveling west struck her, throwing her into the eastbound lanes of the freeway. She was taken to Parkland Memorial Hospital where she died from her injuries.

The three-vehicle accident shut down both sides of LBJ Freeway for several hours.

Police said a tractor-trailer was heading east on the freeway and driving over a hill when he locked his brakes to avoid hitting two trucks parked on the freeway's shoulder.

The tractor-trailer crashed into the two pickups, causing all three vehicles to burst into flames. One driver was taken to an area hospital. That driver's condition was unknown Sunday evening.

Sgt. Cerda said the tractor-trailer driver faces a misdemeanor charge of faulty evasion action.

A man apparently spray painting graffiti on an overpass fell Saturday night onto the 5 Freeway in East Los Angeles, authorities said.

Several motorists told authorities that the man had possibly broken his back at about 9:45 p.m. and had a can of spray paint clutched in his hands as he lay on the freeway near the Main Street off-ramp, said California Highway Patrol spokesman David Porter.

The accident comes about three weeks after prolific tagger Cyrus Yazdani -- who goes by the moniker "Buket" -- was arrested for causing hundreds of thousands of dollars in property damage.

Yazdani is perhaps most recognized for a YouTube video that shows him climbing and spray painting behind the Hollywood Freeway sign near Melrose Avenue as traffic speeds below.

A 19-year-old man accidentally shot and killed himself Tuesday morning while he was attempting to rob a Grand Prairie home, authorities said.

Cameron Sands, 19, of Fort Worth kicked in the door of the house and then shot himself in the stomach as he pulled a gun out of his pants to shoot the homeowner, Grand Prairie police said. The homeowner was not injured.

After Mr. Sands shot himself, he dropped the gun and ran out of the home. Police found his body around 5:30 a.m. in the driveway of the home in the 2800 block Garden Grove Road, said Lt. John Brimmer, a Grand Prairie police spokesman.

This is the first that I've heard of a robbery suspect killing himself as he is drawing a gun out of his waist band, Lt. Brimmer said. The criminal evidence points to that. It certainly isn't common.

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner has ruled the death an accident.

Six Hurt After Petroleum Tank Explosion

SANTA PAULA, Calif. (AP) ― Six people are hospitalized after an explosion caused by a farmworker using a torch to remove the lid from a 55-gallon petroleum drum in Santa Paula.

Ventura County Fire Department spokesman Bill Nash says three people were hospitalized in critical condition and three others, including a 4-year-old girl, had moderate injuries after Sunday's explosion.

Witnesses say all the victims were standing near the tank when it exploded.

The popular "Batman the Ride" rollercoaster at Six Flags Over Georgia remained closed Sunday while authorities continued investigating the death of a teenager who jumped over two fences and was struck by the ride.

The 17-year-old South Carolina teen who died was identified as Asia Leeshawn Ferguson, of Springfield, S.C. He was on a church outing when the incident occurred about 2 p.m. Saturday. It was the second Batman ride-related death at the Cobb County park.

According to police and the amusement park, Ferguson and a friend climbed over two 6-foot fences -- a wrought-iron style park perimeter fence and a second chainlink fence around the Batman ride -- as a shortcut to get back into the park after lunch. Signs about 40 to 50 feet apart on the outer fence warn that it is a "restricted area" for "authorized personnel only."

According to park officials, a sign on a locked gate at the chain link fence also reads "Danger zone" and "Do not enter."

Ferguson was decapitated when the ride struck him, police said.

A British holidaymaker has died after falling 40ft from a hotel during a forfeit for losing a game of poker.

Mark Day, 20, plunged to his death in a freak accident on Sunday night during a holiday with university friends at the three-star Majorca Beach Hotel in the resort of Magalluf.

Police sources revealed that after losing a game of cards he was dared to strip off and run along a hotel corridor in just his socks and underpants.

But he lost his balance at the end of the passageway and smashed through a fifth-floor window, falling to concrete below. He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics shortly after m.

Mr Day's friends, Marc Smart and Steve Kimberley, both 21, who studied with him at the University of Essex, are helping police piece together the events leading up to the incident.

A source said: "We're not clear yet whether he slipped because he lost his balance as he ran with just his socks on or whether he was running too fast and couldn't stop in time.

"But he crashed through the window and fell more than 40 feet from the corridor which was on the fifth-floor.

"We believe the victim had been drinking and that may also have impaired his judgement."

The hotel refused to make an official comment but a receptionist said: "The dead man was with two friends who are talking to the police at the moment. We don't expect them to return to the hotel."

The pair, who were sharing room 519 with the victim, have been moved to another hotel by travel firm Thomas Cook.

Although police have ruled out anything suspicious related to the death, an investigating judge has now taken charge of a routine investigation.

The 11-storey hotel Majorca Beach Hotel is located directly opposite the beach in Magalluf and is popular with British holidaymakers.

BEDFORD - A 61-year-old White Plains woman who ate white mushrooms she found growing wild at the Interstate 684 rest stop died in the hospital, the Westchester County Health Department confirmed this morning.

Zoila Tapia died on Thursday, four days after eating the pure white mushrooms known as death angels.

It was not clear how soon she went to the hospital after eating the poisonous mushrooms on July 6 in woods near the rest stop in Bedford.

Poisoning symptoms include vomiting, severe abdominal pain, internal bleeding, kidney failure, and eventually death.

The county Health Department cautioned against eating any mushrooms found in the wild, because it is difficult to distinguish poisonous varieties from edible ones.

"Obviously this is extremely rare," Health Department spokeswoman Caren Halbfinger said of the poisoning death. "It is very unfortunate."

The state Department of Transportation, which maintains the rest stop, has already removed the mushrooms.

AN 18-year-old man who stripped down to his underwear and played "chicken" with cars on a major Melbourne freeway is critically ill in hospital after he was hit.

The teenager from South Morang was taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital after he was struck by a Toyota Hilux on the Tullamarine Freeway in Flemington just before 1.30am (AEST).

He had been playing "chicken" on the freeway on-ramp as a dare, police said.

The driver of the van, a 31-year-old man from Hillside, was taken to hospital and treated for shock. His passenger, a 61-year-old woman, escaped injury.

The vehicle was a write-off as a result of the collision, police said.

Police say they are dismayed at the "utter stupidity" of the 18-year-old and say it was lucky nobody was killed.
